The current Nissan GT-R is not a Skyline. Know what is? The Infiniti G-Series. As usual a premium brand for Japanese luxury cars hasn't been necessary in their homeland, but these days it seems to be different. Lexus are now in Japan, and Nissan are about to start selling Infiniti models in the JDM market as well. With the new Q50 replacing the G37/Skyline very soon, that most likely means the end of their famous sports saloon.
The Skyline name first appeared on a luxury car made by Prince in 1957, with 1300kg being motivated by a mere 60 horsepower from 1.5 litres. It stayed in production until 1963, with a 96bhp 1.9L Skyline Sport coupé and convertible version along the way that looked like a pissed-off praying mantis at the front. From 1963 to 1968, the "S50" generation Skyline oversaw the merging of Prince and Datsun to make Nissan. It kept the Prince badge in most markets, and this was the generation that spawned the Skyline 2000 GT (S54), !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! of which famously came 2nd against a Porsche 904 in the Japan GP having lead a lap or two of it. And another one came 3rd. And 4th. And 5th... and 6th.
From then on the Skyline's association with motorsport got stronger and stronger, giving us the GT-R (KPGC10) in 1970 which won 49 domestic touring car races in a row (beaten in race 50 by a Mazda RX-3). I don't need to tell you cultured individuals what happened after that and the "Kenmeri" KPGC110, of course. The 1989-95 BNR32 dominated Japanese touring cars again, as well as Bathurst and Australian touring cars, and the reputation for success continued on even after the road car was killed off in 2002.
In 2007 the GT-R badge separated from the Nissan Skyline with the ballistic R35, designed from the ground up on a bespoke platform, but the Japanese 3-Series continued as the V35 and soon-outgoing V36. With nearly 50 years of racing heritage and a lineage stretching back even further, are they really going to kill off the Skyline? Well, with the Infiniti Q50 on sale in Japan, I don't see how they can avoid it, unless they continued offering the outgoing car as a Nissan. There's no way they could sell the Q50 under both badges.
We'll see. But be prepared to say farewell to the Nissan Skyline. Technically the model line is carrying on, but the name will no longer have any kudos.

Come to the US, where you can still find Skyline-badged G35 coupes :)

I would argue there hasn't been a skyline since the R34.

How so?

What's in a name? that which we call a Skyline
By any other name would drive as sweet

Like you stated the GTR and Skyline separated. Its cool that we got the Z back in the same product plan, but since the skyline has no longer been a less powerful coupe/sedan version of the GTR .... Its no longer been a skyline to me.
P.S. - I've always wanted a skyline with a fully modified GTR drivetrain. It looks so unassuming, would be a great sleeper with 600+ hp.

This!
Nissan made a mistake separating the GT-R from the Skyline, and not using the Skyline on US-bound G35/7's. The Skyline name has such a following too!

*le sigh*
Technically that's the only kind of G35 Coupé there is in Japan, anyway... unless there's a USDM cult that swaps them for Infiniti ones, which there probably is.
I actually saw a V35 Skyline Coupe at a supermarket once. I can't find the picture, though =/

Seeing as the Skyline wasn't originally a diluted GT-R, I don't see it that way.
I want the R33 GT-R Autech 40th Anniversary Edition for similar reasons.

There are multiple owners here that swap the badging for Skyline 350GT insignia.

Hopefully it does.
I sat in a Q50 at Goodwood and it was pretty nice. There's more rear legroom than it seems, because the seat bases are quite long.

I know the Skyline came first, but thats not where I was going with it. The skyline turned into a rebadged G IMO. There is clear lineage before and after the R34 - G35 change.
But that Autech is a beaut though.

I'd say the G-line is still a skyline. They just don't do a super high performance version, i.e. Skyline GTR. They just do a separate high performance 'GTR'.
Also isn't the Z just based off the G-coupe?
![]() 10/14/2013 at 13:15 |
|
Well considering the GT-R was based off the skyline... There has always been a Skyline. It's just that the V35 never got the performance variant. And the GT-R name was dead for quite a few years while they made the R35.
![]() 10/14/2013 at 13:18 |

The G35/G37 has sold amazingly well in the US though, and the GTR built on it's own platform is a much better car. (One of the fastest 0-60 speeds, fastest nurburgring times, etc).

I'm sure Nissan/Infiniti made a ton of money with the newer G's in the U.S. so it was a good change, but IMO its not a skyline.
![]() 10/14/2013 at 13:30 |

Yea the G, Z, and FX are all the same platform. (so the FX is a 370z wagon?)
But your probably right, I'm just being snobby because there is a clear difference between the R34-G35 change.
![]() 10/14/2013 at 13:31 |
|
As the owner of a G37, I can say that I really don't give much of a shit about the heritage of whatever the car was/is/might be, in Japan. I know that will enrage the JDM crowd, but sorry. I really like my G. It was a great option for performance, practicality and price, back when I bought it. Not sure that same can be said for the Q50, but that has nothing to do with what the badge is called on the car. That simply has to do with engineering and pricing.
![]() 10/14/2013 at 13:34 |
|
I don't know how to tell you this, but the Skyline 350GT came out before the G35.
And considering Infiniti is only a North American brand, it's pretty foolish AND ignorant to say that it's a "rebadged G" when in reality the G is a rebadged Skyline.
The G35/Skyline is very much a Skyline because it was the Skyline 350GT first. Does this mean the Acura TSX isn't a Honda Accord now?
![]() 10/14/2013 at 13:37 |
|
It hasn't sold as well as Infiniti had hoped. They had hoped for a proper 3-Series fighter the G-car just wasn't it. The first gen was a fun car, but a truly terrible luxury car. And the current G37 isn't bad, but it's still falling short. Same with the upcoming Q50 unfortunately.
The R34 GT-R still beat plenty of records. And considering the fact the Skyline GT-R sold skylines, what is selling the V37 Skyline now? Nothing.
![]() 10/14/2013 at 13:39 |
|
I'm right with you on this. Clearly the design language on the car completely split after the r34. The GT-R is the successor to even the sedan Skylines.
Still will suck to see the name totally disappear though.
![]() 10/14/2013 at 13:41 |
|
I'm not so sure I'm upset about this.
I've never associated the GT-Rs with their Skyline names. Its always been R32, R33, R34, R35. People know what you refer to, and while the Skyline name is cool it has roughly no commercial appeal in most segments of the world that buy such cars.
![]() 10/14/2013 at 13:49 |
|
In a few years when sales slump, they'll rename Infiniti Prince, and all will be well.
![]() 10/14/2013 at 13:52 |
|
The Skyline name will not die. Just like the Accord and the Corolla, the "Skyline" moniker is an absolutely vital part of Nissan's sales portfolio within Japan. It, and the GT-R both trickle influence down through the rest of the range of JDM Nissan models.
Although now separate from the GT-R nomenclature, the Skyline nameplate has proven to be very very successful in Japan, and continues to be.
If anything, Nissan may downgrade the nameplate in terms of available luxuries and options, but it certainly won't kill it.
I suggest the author does some research (or go live in Japan like I do half the year) before making such bold claims.
It's akin to saying that the 911 will die just because the Cayman sells better.
The monikers themselves are the entire livelihood of the brand, and what it's based around.
![]() 10/14/2013 at 13:54 |
|
Why don't you just admit that you hate the association with a Japanese luxury brand more than anything else. To you, it must be a little retro and very obscure to like it.
The chassis on the current Skyline GT (V35/V36) are competent and are still what the GT-R is based off of. It's not a completely ground-up rebuild like the article states. The car is built on the same production line as Infiniti G35 and Skyline GT350s.
![]() 10/14/2013 at 14:00 |

Not to be rude but I trust wiki over you and the GTR isn't stated on the FM platform and its made in a different city.
Also don't get me wrong I like hipster stuff, but I also really like the Z & G. I even test drove a G35 and liked it less than a year ago.
![]() 10/14/2013 at 14:01 |
|
The author of Carscoops, where I got this from?
At any rate, while Nissan hasn't confirmed anything about the Skyline, the Infiniti Q50 - the direct replacement - is going on sale in Japan as the Infiniti Q50, which doesn't really leave the Skyline with anywhere to go, so logically it's out. They could downgrade the badge, but would that really be a good thing?
![]() 10/14/2013 at 14:01 |

I just bought a 2005 G35 Coupe 6MT. It's the best car I could find that I could afford. It's fun and has some nice amenities. I can tell the previous owner really cared for it as well. I did seriously consider for a moment about swapping to the Skyline bodging, but decided not to. I always wanted a Z or a Skyline when i was a teenager playing racing games, so I found a perfect compromise—in one sense, it's a Skyline, and in another, it's a stretched 350Z with nicer trim. Plus people are surprised when I tell them it's an 05—they think it still looks new.

Don't trust everything you hear.
BTW, Infiniti has been a Premium option at all (what used to be) Nissan Blue dealers for many years now here. The only difference is that now it will be marketed as a standalone brand from Nissan.
Many news outlets are relaying this misinformation, because most of them (I can only assume) have never been to Japan and spent any great deal of time here.
There's nothing wrong with the Skyline nameplate being downgraded. The HCR32 to ER34 was not premium in any way. It was simply a "sporting RWD sedan for under 30,000 dollars". Most recently, the 370GT Skyline has ballooned to well over 30,000 here. It would actually be within Nissan's BEST interests to downgrade available options and sell a base V6 model based off 370Z architecture. Keep in mind the next generation Z will be downsizing also...
While the G50 will only get bigger .
Got to look at all angles my man!

Wether it came out a year or two early in Japan first, doesn't negate the fact it changed a lot. It completely abandoned its design roots & went for sales in the U.S.
By the way when I tried to look up skyline sales all I could find was r30-r34 sales, so apparently the internet agrees with me. However I could find the refreshed g37/skyline sales number though.
2006 Skyline - 4144
2006 G35/37 - 60471
So yea there was definite product plan (that worked) to completely change the "skyline".

If you watch the National Geographic special on the GT-R, you can see the Tochigi plant producing Infiniti G right alongside the GT-R. Obviously they're a completely different beast as far as production goes, but they are built in the same plant, within seconds of each other.
Photographic evidence:
http://blog.nissan-global.com/EN/?p=2168
Little blurb about the GT-R's PM platform being an advanced version of the FM platform:
http://www.thefreelibrary.com/VIDEO%3a+Nissa…
And it's pretty obvious that the lines and body proportions on the GT-R are strikingly similar to the V35 coupe.

I would venture to say yet, because it was never sold as such here at least. If we got the older r32-34 it could have built a legacy and worked. A Japanese Charger could do very well given the chance.

And the new GT-R didn't abandon it's design roots?
Japan's market isn't as big as the US. You think they have the same sales in their country as we do here? You have to remember that the Skyline grew in size with the V35 and V37.
And there was no product plan. They planned on simply keeping up what they have done for the last 20 years with Infiniti. Rebadge Nissans and sell them as Infinitis. Never the other way around.
![]() 10/14/2013 at 15:53 |

I like the name Skyline. I like cool cars with cool names. I think what goes in the US as the GT-R would be cooler if it were called the Skyline GT-R. Cooler still if it looked like an evolution of the R-34, but that's neither here nor there. If they want to call the Q50 the Skyline that'd be fine by me, too. Letter and Number combos are just not doing it for me anymore.
![]() 10/14/2013 at 16:18 |

Not really trolling. Just trying to make sense why you can't accept that the Skyline is the Skyline. Just because you don't like the styling.

Infiniti wouldn't be so lost if it actually had a sales strategy for Europe
all they did was sell the exact same models as what is in the US: initially no diesels at all, and then only in models that were not its intended bread and butter - the M and FX, but not the G. Really, really stupid. the brand still wont have those engines for a while, and unlike the competition there isn't a premium small car either.

The dark side ... e92 335i. Its a better car all around, but like I tell my friends, the Infiniti was 90% as good for 80% of the price, great value, great car.
Edit: I actually had a '03 silver on black coupe first, but it was auto and I got bored of it. I learned to drive stick on the '05 on my way home form the dealer :)
![]() 10/14/2013 at 17:06 |

Yeah, they didn't do that well at all, and they've been pretty slow at opening dealers as well (I think there are only 7 in the UK). They're on the verge of producing a premium small car though, previewed by the Q30 Concept .
![]() 10/14/2013 at 18:20 |

Considering the trend they are taking, the Skyline will turn into the Dodge Darts and Chevy Novas of the world. Will they ever revive the Skyline? The REAL Skylines that they KNOW car fans want? Who knows. They killed off the Supra, the NSX, the FTO, the GTO, the RX-8, whats stopping them? Keep killing them off its not like anyone wants to drive those cars anymore right? smh

I can't speak for the V37, however the G35 and G37 are clearly selling very well without a Skyline GTR:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infiniti_…
From 2002-2012 Infiniti (in just the US) has sold 621,908 G-cars.
Compare that to the R32/R33 from 1989-1998 doing 513,220 globally:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Sk…
Also take a look at the US sale numbers from 2001 to 2002 when the G35 came out.

The Skyline is definitely gone. I drove a Q50s: that Skyline exhaust howl has completely disappeared, and driving it feels artificial.
This isn't to say that it's a bad car (it isn't), but in terms of the topic at hand, it can kiss carrying the sporty Skyline torch goodbye.
![]() 10/14/2013 at 20:01 |

They could still recycle the badge somehow. Maybe as a de-contented Nissan-branded Q50, or as a special edition or trim level or something. With all the equity wrapped up in "Skyline", I doubt they would kill it off entirely. Of course, I also thought the same thing about Eldorado, and Seville, and Deville, and Fleetwood, and Continental, and Town Car, so, shows what I know.

I seriously doubt that Nissan would get rid of the Skyline name. It is such a status and carries a long heritage behind it, that it would be absurd to just kill it. Like the Fairlady or Silvia, Nissan would probably still continue using the Skyline name for JDM models.
![]() 10/15/2013 at 00:01 |

Nissan really needs to make sure the Q50 has a full line up like the R32-R34 Skyline did. BMW offers a sedan and wagon for the 3 series and a coupe and convertible for the 4 series. Also BMW offers multiple engine/transmission options too.
![]() 10/15/2013 at 05:07 |

The R32-34 Skylines were more visually distinct from other sedans and coupes than the more recent ones. That certainly doesn't help.
That said, there's no reason they can't keep the Skyline name under the Infiniti badge. I mean the Skyline wasn't even originally a Nissan.
![]() 10/15/2013 at 05:34 |

I don't think they'll just discard a name with such heritage and fame, it would be outright stupid, so in my opinion, they'll sort is out.
![]() 10/15/2013 at 07:12 |

But Infiniti have a clear new naming system (Q = car, QX = SUV, number = size), and I doubt they'd rename it when they're still desperately trying to establish an identity.
![]() 10/15/2013 at 08:04 |

Toyota did the same thing with Lexus, except the Toyota still makes a couple luxury models that aren't part of the Lexus lineup, if only because there's too much history behind them to kill them off: the Crown, and the Mark X (the successor of the Mark II).
If Nissan decides the Infinity badge isn't selling more cars or gaining badge value over regular Nissans, we can assume they will bring the Skyline back.

Ok, here's my 10c. I agree fully with Milky here. The Skyline has been in retirement since the passing of the R34. I realize that, in spirit, sort of, the Infinity G35 was the successor, but I mean really, have you seen the thing? It's no Skyline. Nissan didn't call it a Skyline. I've never heard ANYONE seriously refer to it as a Skyline (although, as I mentioned previously, people do understand that it's a spiritual successor). The new GT-R is not a Skyline. I've only heard Honda kids refer to them as such, and I just about smacked one when I heard it. Is the new GT-R cool? Sure. Is it a Skyline? No, no it is not. Could it have been? I'm not sure. It seems to be awfully Americanized...Let's just say it's the closest car in production today.
Now, is the Skyline dead: Could be. I prefer "retired" to "dead". Nissan nerds, like myself, will always look back fondly on what Nissan managed to accomplish with the BNR32-34 GTRs. We would be positively insulted if the new Infiniti Q4-whatever got badged as a Skyline. We would be mildly miffed if the 2015 GTR got the word Skyline inserted into the middle there. Or maybe we wouldn't. I think that the day Nissan builds a car from the ground up to be both incredibly competitive on the track, and to be sellable in the global market, and it's up to their standards, they'll bring the name out of retirement.
Until then, I'm gonna keep on dreaming about getting that R32 that I oh so desperately want (and enjoying my RB20'd S13 until then)
![]() 10/15/2013 at 19:22 |

*I daresay people in Japan call it a Skyline, seeing as, in Japan, Nissan call(ed) it the Skyline.

They won't get rid of the Skyline name. It will likely go downmarket, back where it was in the R32-34 generations (for reference, when teh V35 was introduced, they moved it upmarket slightly). Hopefully this does not mean a move to FWD and CVTs, though. That would suck.
![]() 10/16/2013 at 14:33 |

Called which? The G35? The GTR?
The Skyline name doesn't have the same brand recognition over here, for sure, but why would Nissan call it a Skyline over there and not over here?
Next you're gonna tell me that there's an S16 Silvia...
All the same, fun article. This stuff is very relevant to my interests.
![]() 10/16/2013 at 15:57 |

The G35/7 in all its forms (and therefore not the GT-R) is called Skyline in Japan because until recently, Infiniti didn't exist in Japan. Japanese companies don't need a posh badge to flog luxury cars to their own people, so they sold them under the original brand. The Infiniti M is called the Nissan Fuga, for example, and the Lexus IS was called the Toyota Altezza until recently.
Premium Japanese brands are now entering the JDM market, though, which is where this problem arises. What do they do with a prestigious JDM name when its replacement will be sold with a different brand and thus model name? Transfer it to some other car? Kill it off? Call it Infiniti Skyline?
Alas, there is no S16 Silvia. I daresay the internet would've exploded upon hearing that news.

I didn't know that they were calling the G-series Skylines in Japan. That's...disappointing. If Nissan decides to call the Infiniti G-whatever the "Infiniti Skyline", I'll be inclined to slap a Nissan marketing rep.
Then again, knowing that the G35 is badged so prestigiously over there kind of already makes me want to slap one.
Good chatting with you :)

Shame that RWD cars dying off. I know the 36 series wasn't a GTR but
it still beats garbage like Maxima-Altima.
